What Leather Do You Use?
I’m doing some research into the leather people actually use for their projects, and I’d like to hear directly from the people working with it. I’m especially interested in elk 3–4 oz, deer 2½–3 oz and American bison 4–5 oz, but don’t limit your answer to those. If you use cowhide, goatskin, moose, horsehide, heavier elk or deer, or another leather, tell us about it.
What leather do you use and what do you make from it? What weight or thickness do you prefer? Do you normally buy whole hides, sides, pieces, or by the square foot? And probably most important, what are you currently paying for good usable leather? If you know your price per square foot include that. If you normally buy by the whole hide, just tell us about what you usually pay for the hide.
I’d like to get a better picture of what working leather craftsmen are actually buying and using, not just what suppliers say people use.
